Verse 44

वैकुंठः पुरुषः प्राणः प्राणदः प्रणवः पृथुः ।

हिरण्यगर्भः शत्रुघ्नो व्याप्तो वायुरधोक्षजः ।।

vaikuṇṭha purua prāṇa prāṇada praava pthu |
hirayagarbha śatrughnō vyāptō vāyuradhōkaja ||

406.Vaikuṇṭha:

Vaikunta is not just a final abode. It is not a place but the state.

Vaikunta stithi means wherever he exists, all such places are vaikuntha.

Also, Vikunta- no obstacles or dosha (vigata- no; kunta means obstacles or deficiency)

Hence he is called Vaikunta

Also, whenever there are two or more movements that are discordant with each other, the one who brings these divergent categories together is Vikunta. He who is enables it is Vaikunthah.

Vividha Kunta gateh prathihatih vikunta, vikuntayah kartaa iti vaikuntah

For eg, the panch bhootas, air and wind is together, water and fire is together, etc, the one who makes these elements exist in harmony is Vaikunta and removes the obstacles for their co-existence.

Wherever there are obstacles for peaceful co-existence of any elements in this universe, the name Vaikunta, removes such obstacles.

407. Purua:

Puru + sha

Puru means the best, sha means shat (six)gunas.

The one who is rich in all the six gunas is Purusha.

He is within us. Whoever bears Him in his heart is Purusha.

Puri shayanaat va purusha

He is in deep sleep or yoganidra in us. He is present in sakshi rupa, and observes us.

He is present as the jnana, that we obtain through our indriyas and the jnana that is inherently present within us. The knowledge is poorna or complete. Hence he is Purusha.

408. Prāṇa:

The poorna jnana that we obtain gives us kriya shakti.

Praanaatmana cheshtayan iti vaa pranah

To complete the kriya or karma, we need prana. He gives us that movement or life force in the form of prana.

Praaniti kshetrajna rupena iti praanah

He gives our body the awareness or consciousness of the external world. He lives as Kshetrajna (knower in the body) or functions in the form of vital force called Prana.

The kriya we do can make us enlightened (prakashvan) or destroy us. We call that karma phala or fruits of our karma.

Pra+ aa + na, what we eat get divided into 3 parts, one part for the brain to carry our activities, one part to the blood, and the digested part removed out of the body. He makes movement possible.

409. Prāṇada:

One who is the giver of life.

Pranaan daadati iti pranadah

Antha-sattva- the will power, he gives us that will power to take us towards him even though the body may be weak.

He causes us to be energised and leads us to him.

410. Praava:

Pranauti iti pranavah

Means sound or shruthi

He makes us worship him with the sound of ‘Om’. He introduces himself to us through his qualities and makes us worship us.

Pranamyate iti vaa pranavah

He is fit to be worshipped.

411. Pthu:

One who has expanded himself as the world.

Prapancha rupena vistritvaat prithuh

He is spread everywhere in the entire universe. We have seen that the name Vishnu also means the same.

412. Hirayagarbha:

Hiranya refers to gold. Hariyathi iti Hiranya;

He is the purest, most attractive, must illuminated and the most coveted, hence he is Hiranya.

Garbha is one that generates.

He generates all that is great – Hiranya, hence he is Hiranya garbha.

Also, garbha means something that is hidden. All that was hidden due to ajnana, when we see it in the golden glow we are able to see everything as Vishnu, the golden light of Hiranyagarbha makes us see in the light of knowledge.

413. Śhatrughna:

Though all ajnana is destroyed, some ajnana may still be present. He destroys that.

Tridasha shatrun hanti iti shatrughnah

One who destroys the enemies of the Devas. He not only destroys enemies but also destroys enmity, hence there are no enemies.

There are two kinds of enemies for us – internal and external

People who create obstacles in the external world are external enemies. The internal enemies are kama (lust), krodha ( anger), lobha (greed), moha, mada, matsarya, manas etc. he destroys both kinds of enemies.

We often look at people, beings and things around us as svajati (people or things who are dear to me) and vijati ( people or things I don’t like) when we look at everything as dear to me, then enemity itself is destroyed.

414.Vyāpta:

Vi+ aptha – one who we want the most and is there for us at all times.

Vya + aptha – the one who is present for us irrespective of whether we want him the most or not. He is full of affection for us.

Like a child may not know the mother yet the mother never fails to protect the child.

He protects us when we fall. He may not protect us directly, but he may be the cause due to which the effect happens.

415 .Vāyu:

Va (to know) + ayu (ayusha- life)

He has given us life so that we may know about him.

Like vayu, He always moves towards his devotees who seek him. Hence, we must also move towards him, as he is our goal.

The Bhagavad Gita 7.9 says, punyo gandhah prithivyaam cha.

He resides as auspicious fragrance on Earth.

416. Adhokaja:

Adhokshaja means, Adhah (brings to an end) + aksha (indriyas)+ ja (the knowledge born or gained due to indriyas),

Whatever we see, or hear or touch or use our indriyas to know, then we come to know it’s presence. But for the lord, he does not need the indriyas to sense things. He knows everything without using the indriyas and hence is called adhokshaja.

He himself is jnana. His knowledge is unique. Hence he is adokhshaja.

Jai Shri Krishna!
