सुभुजो दुर्धरो वाग्मी महेंद्रो वसुदो वसुः ।
नैक-रूपो बृहद-रूपः शिपिविष्टः प्रकाशनः ।।
266. Subhujaḥ:
He shoulders his responsibilities in the best possible way.
Shobhanah bhujaah jagat rakshakaraah asya asti iti subhujah
We have seen the chaturbhuja roopa where he holds 4 ayudhas to protect
us. Shankha to create, Chakra to sustain and protects dharma, Gadha to destroy asuri shakti, and lotus for
laya, to give moksha.
he uses his ayudhas and carries on his responsibility of the universe.
267. Durdharaḥ:
Dhara means the potential to hold or support
Durdhara means he cannot be supported by anyone, because he supports us and He also supports himself.
Prithivya deeni api lokadharakani anyaihi dhaarayitum ashakyaani dhaarayitum shakyah iti durdharah
He is the one who holds up the universe, no one is powerful enough to match him.
268. Vāgmi:
Yatho nisrutha brahma mayi vaak tasmad vagmi
Vak means jnana
Vagmi is the one who is holding that knowledge. The vedas came from the Lord and hence he is called Vagmi.
269. Mahendraḥ:
He is greater than Indra
Mahan cha asau indrah cha iti mahendrah eeshvaraanaam api eshwarah
He is greater than Indra and the Lord of all the Gods including Indra.
Our indriyas are controlled by the gods and he controls the Gods, so he is Mahendra.
It comes from the dhatu idi which means paramaishwarya or the owner of immense wealth.
270. Vasudaḥ:
Vasu means wealth and Daha means one who gives.
Vasu dadati iti vasudah
One who bestows wealth on his followers is Vasuh.
He works in indirect ways. He may give us wealth through someone else or via someone. His vibhooti roopa works through those who do charity. He influences them to give.
271. Vasuḥ:
He not only gives wealth but he himself is Vasu. He is the wealth
that he gives.
Deeyamanam tad vasu api sa eva.
Vasu also means Vasati means to reside. He resides in our hearts.
The wealth of his grace never diminishes.
Acchadayati aatma swaroopam mayaya iti vaa vasuh
He resides in our heart using his Maya and hence he cannot be perceived.
272. Naikarūpaḥ:
Na + eka+ rupah
He doesn’t have just one form. He assumes many forms.
Ekam roopam asya na vidyate iti naikaroopah
Not just his avatars but every creation of his is his roopa. So he does
not have an exclusive form.
Jale Vishnuh sthale Vishnuh vishnur akasham uchyate
Sthavaram jangamam vishnuh sarvam vishu mayam jagat.
Which means,
Water is Vishnu, every place is Vishnu, sky is Vishnu, everything that
moves and everything that does not is Vishnu, everything in the universe is
nothing but Vishnu.
273. Bṛhadrūpaḥ:
Ano raniyana, mahato mahiyana
Smaller than the smallest atom is Vishnu, bigger than the biggest is
Vishnu.
Brihan mahat varahadi rupam asya iti brihadroopah
He is brihadroopa because he has assumed the huge forms like Varaha the
boar that picked up the earth on its snout. The other huge manifestations are
that of Vamana who became the huge Trivikrama or Matsya, the gigantic
fish.
Athya tishtat dashangulam
He is not only as large as the universe itself but ten measures bigger than
that.
274. Śhipiviṣṭaḥ:
Shipi means animal or pashu.
It is said, pasyati iti pashu. The
one that simply watches is pashuh.
He exists in all pashu and prani in his Chaitanya roopa.
Paasha means the one who is baddha or that which does not allow us to be
free.
There can be 5 types of paasha –
Avidya which means ignorance. Due
to this we always keep wondering who we are. It’s a question that haunts us all
our lives.
from this avidya or ignorance arises asmita
Asmita makes us think about our purpose for being here, what our
goal is, and where we should go. This results in us being trapped in this mortal
body and in the cycle of birth and death and this does not let us take steps
towards our moksha.
From this arises raga
Raga is attraction or mamatva. We are attached to all that we think is
ours.
Dvesha means aversion. We do not like what does not belong to us.
Abhinivesha. We keep hanging on to this life because we are so attached
to it. it signals our downward spiral towards avonatti.
So if we don’t have vidya, this chain of pashaas occur and we also
become a pashu.
He is shipivishta because he resides in us and helps us go from avidya
to vidya.
Shipi also means rays of the sun.
Vistah means He sustains us in
the form of the sun’s rays.
He illuminates and makes the jnana visible.
275. Prakāśanaḥ:
Prakasha means light. The rays of the sun spread the light everywhere. It illuminates everything. Hence he is the one who illumines everything. He destroys darkness or ignorance in the form of shipivista.
He lives in the prani in the form of prakasha or light and illuminates
them.
Prakasayati iti prakashanah
