पद्मनाभो-अरविंदाक्षः पद्मगर्भः शरीरभृत ।
महर्धि-ऋद्धो वृद्धात्मा महाक्षो गरुड़ध्वजः ।।
348. Padma-nābhaḥ:
We have already seen that this name means the one who has a lotus originating from his navel.
In the previous verse, we saw that the stem of the lotus is the axle and the lotus bud is held in the Lord’s hand. When he rotates the stem, the universe is created.
Once the universe is created, he is he who sustains and protects it. He holds the axle firm in his hand and protects us. He helps us finish our karma for which we have come into this universe.
He is also the one who resides in the hrudaya kamala.
Padmasya naabhau madhye karnikayaam stithah iti padmanabhah
Our heart is the hridaya kamala and he sits in the hridaya kamala in the center (nabhi) of the lotus.
349. Aravindākṣaḥ:
Aravinda sadrishe aksheeni asya iti arvindakshah
One whose eyes resemble Aravinda or the Lotus. Just like a bloomed lotus, his eyes are wide open and illuminated.
Also, Arvindakha can be split as, aravi + dha + askha
Ara means dark ; aravi means darkness. (ravi means sun or bright light)
Dha means to destroy
Aksha means eyes
The sun and moon are His eyes. They are so bright and illuminated. They destroy darkness.
We have also seen that Aksha means axle ; ara means petals ; vinda means to open
When he rotates the axle, the petals open wide like the petals of the lotus.
Ar also means gathi to move
350. Padma-garbhaḥ:
He is present inside the garbha of the lotus, and controls from within. One who is fit to be worshipped in the middle of the heart-lotus.
Brahma is also called padma garbha.
This name is laya karaka. The garbha or womb is hidden and dark. This name indicates that when pralaya happens we are absorbed in the lord and go back into his garbha where everything is dark again.
351. Śharīra-bhṛt:
Poshyan anna rupena prana rupena vaa sharirinaam shariani dharayati iti sharirabhrit
He nourishes us and protects us through food and prana. Hence he is sharirabrut. He supports the bodies of beings, strengthening them in the form of Anna (Food) and Prana.
Sva mayaya sharirani bibharthi iti sharirabhrit
With his own maya he takes avatar or bears different forms for protecting dharma and annihilating adharma, and hence he is sharirabhrit.
He does not discriminate between us and him and he resides in us like he would reside in himself and protects us.
Using his sankalpa shakthi, the lord created the universe and he he manifested as Brahma, the first being to get sharira.
352. Mahardhi:
Riddhi means prosperity; maha means magnificent.
Hence he is the one whose opulence or prosperity is magnificent.
Mahat riddhih vibhutih asya iti mahariddhih
The Bhagavad Gita describes his opulence in the Vibhooti yoga.
Since he is so prosperous, he also bestows his prosperity on his devotees.
353. Ṛddhaḥ:
Riddhi means prosperity but it also means growth or to expand. The universe is continuously expanding or growing.
One who has enormous Riddhi or growth.
Prapancha rupena vartamanatvaat riddhah
He is the expansive form of the universe.
354.Vṛddhātmā:
Vriddha means old. He is the oldest, the one whose Atma or body is Vruddha or ancient, hence he is vriddhatma.
The older things are, the more precious and wise it is. So is he.
355. Mahākṣaḥ:
Aksha means eyes; maha means great
He has great eyes in the sense that he takes care of everyone. He observes us keenly and no matter how minute one is or how huge something is, he ensures that it is taken care of to its logical end. He also helps to make the necessary changes to reach its logical end.
356. Garuḍa-dhvajaḥ:
Garuda means the eagle and vahana of Lord Vishnu, Dhvaja means flag.
One who has got Garuda as his flag.
Garuda can also be interpreted as,
Ga means jnana + ruda means one who rides
He rides on the wings of jnana.
The Dhvaja or flag symbolises conquest. We plant a flag when we conquer something.
The creation is his signature style. It is his conquest.
Garuda has 5 vyuhas- Satyan, suparnan, garudan, darkshyan, vihakeshvaran.
Just like garuda is the vahana for the Lord, these 5 vyuhas are vahanas for the panch pranas- prana, apana, vyana, samana and udana.
Jai Shri Krishna!
