आवर्तनो निवृत्तात्मा संवृतः सं-प्रमर्दनः ।
अहः संवर्तको वह्निः अनिलो धरणीधरः ।।
229.Āvrtanaḥ:
Avartana means again and again. The endless cycle of birth and death goes on depending on our karmas. Similarly, the cycle of creation and
destruction also keeps going on for eternity. He is the one who keeps the cycle
going on and hence is Avartanah.
Avartana also means a whirlpool. If the samsara is an ocean or Samudra,
we are tangled in the whirlpool of bandhana. We are ‘baddha’ and not free. He
frees us from this whirlpool of samsara bandhana.
avarta nayati avartanah
He who has no end because he has no beginning, is avratnah.
230. Nivṛttātmā:
His mind is nivtrut atma. He is always in yoga nidra.
Antarnivishta bhavam cha- He is the one who is drawn into himself.
Paramvairagya khyapanaya vishayebhayah pratyhrtamanah nivruttatma
He is completely detached from his actions and the fruits of it.
Nivrutta also means to retire.
There are two types of dharma –
Pravrutti dharma where one performs karma and enjoys fruits of karma
and nivrutti dharma where there is no desire for fruits or karma. This is
the path to moksha.
He takes the nivrutta to the path of moksha.
He is also called nivruttatma because like lotus, that stays in water, and yet not a drop of water sticks to it, he is completely detached to everything. He performs the actions but accumulates no
karma. He stays niskalmashah.
Samsara bandhan nivrutta atma svarupam asya iti nivruttatma .
He is devoid of samsara bandhana. One whose being is free or untouched
by the bondage of Samsara.
231. Saṁavṛtaḥ:
Samavrtah means the one who is hidden. He is hidden within us. That is
why we must turn inward if we want to find him. He is in our hearts or hrudaya
kamala. Our ignorance makes it difficult for us to realise this fact.
He takes away the ignorance and makes us realise the path to find him.
232.Sampramardanaḥ:
Samyak pramardhayati rudra kaladyabhih vibhootih iti sampramardhanah
Kala signifies Yama, Rudra signifies destruction. Both signal the end of
something.
He destroys or puts an end to the illusion/ maya and darkness due to
ignorance.
His Light or knowledge shows us his vibhutis (his manifestations) and
uses them to dispel the darkness of ignorance.
The ahamkara tattva signifies our identity.
But the minute we think of ourselves as ‘I’, we differentiate ourselves
from others. We also differentiated ourselves from the Lord because the ego or
aham has set in.
Aham is the biggest reason for our downfall.
He destroys the aham and is hence called sampramardana.
Ek akshara posha (encyclopaedia) breaks it as,
Sam (sama – just or fair) + pra (finest or greatest jnana - prajnanan) +
mardhana ( destroys )
He gives us the knowledge and destroys ignorance in us.
233. Ahaḥ-saṁvartakaḥ:
Ahah means light
The Lord who, as the sun, regulates the succession of day and night and
time.
As per the Vedas, Sun never rises or sets. It is always there. During
the day it is present as the Sun, and at night it is present as Agni.
He is the one who controls such a Sun which is always present and which
is an indicator of kala. He controls the time, day and night and the stages of
life.
Creation and destruction gives us the time concept that he controls.
234. Vahniḥ:
Vahnih is derived from the root 'vah' which means to carry or bear. hence he is the one who bears or supports us.
vahni also means the sacrificial fire or homa.
Havirvahanat vannihi
One, who as fire, carries the offerings made to the Devas in the sacrificial fire.
235. Anilaḥ:
Anila means gas /air and refers to prana.
Hence he is the giver of life.
Ananat ujjeevanat anilah – He gives us life by giving us the vital life
breath.
Our body is the tool or upadhi- to perform karma. For the body to exist we
need prana. That is anila.
Pranat vayur ajayatat - The wind was born out of his breath.
Ila – means urge
He doesn’t need prerana, or purpose to perform his actions. He works on his
own accord.
anaditvat aniti yo asu anilah. We don’t know where he has come from,
hence he is anila.
He is trigunateeta and therefore too, he is called anila.
Anila is also split as, Na niliyate. He is not destroyed.
Aa nilayah anila. Nilaya means home .
He is the one who has no fixed residence. He is everywhere. The entire
universe is his residence.
Nilaya also means ashraya. It means that no one is so great as to give him
ashraya. But we can get ashraya in
him.
Also, nila means to sleep. Anila means one who does not sleep. He is
always in yoga nidra. He is completely awake though his eyes may remain closed.
236. Dharaṇī-dharaḥ:
Dharani means the Earth ; Dharah means to bear
One who supports the world is Dharanidharah.
In the Varaha avatar he saves the earth and bears it on his snout. He also bears the Adishesha, This is also why he is called dharanidhara.
The Panch mahabhoota also signifies the five different kinds of sharira. Akash is the sookshma roopa and denotes anandamaya kosha and is the highest level of attainment. Earth or bhumi is the sthoola roopa and denotes the annamaya kosha.
Dharanidhara, therefore, signifies the annamaya kosha. He provides food to all his creations and sustains them and nurtures them during their time in this universe.
